Educational Mission

EFMR is a nonpartisan and nonprofit community based organization. EFMR was created, and operates, upon the premise that all segments of the community are valuable and must be included in efforts to educate the general public about radiation and nuclear power production. To this end, EFMR has successfully empowered non-governmental organizations, schools, and individuals to monitor for radiation in the environment.

EFMR has brought antagonistic and entrenched entities together and formed a partnership around community investment, radiation education, and remote robotics research. EFMR has fostered a pro-active communal tool that allows citizens to monitor one of the most controversial issues in south central Pennsylvania - nuclear power generation at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station and Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station.

EFMR will continue to leverage its existing educational partnerships with environmental educational bodies, non-governmental organizations, private and public schools, and religious organizations interested in furthering the mission of increasing the awareness of energy education in Pennsylvania.

Thank you from Lower Paxton Township Police Department.

Quotes From Students

"I thought the 3-mile Island thing was cool. We learned about nuclear energy and how they used to control the plants."

"...going to the nuclear power plant taught me the most."

"The part that was the most educational was when we learned about the nuclear energy. I learned a lot of pros/cons of using nuclear power."

"I feel that the most educational part about the trip was the nuclear power in PA. I learned that a lot of waste is just sitting there and anyone can get to it."

"3-mile island was the most educational, it was interesting."

Day Care Information

Evacuation Map | Letter | Survey

We have identified 72 fully licensed day-care providers, both not-for-profit and for-profit facilities, within ten miles of Three Mile Island. These facilities are day care services and group day care services with levels of capacity ranging from 12 to 187. However, some facilities have been licensed with no approved capacity.

Although there are five counties within ten miles of Three Mile Island, Lebanon does not have a licensed facility in the EPZ. The county breakdown is as follows: Cumberland (New Cumberland): 4; Dauphin (Harrisburg, Lawnton, Middletown, Lower Paxton, Lower Swatara, and Steelton-Bressler-Enhaut-Oberlin): 41; Lancaster (Bainbridge, Elizabethtown, and Mt. Joy): 16; and, York (Etters, Lewisberry, Manchester, Mt. Wolf, and Newberrytown): 11.

Responses will be evaluated after a follow-up call is placed to non- respondents to ensure the received a copy of the survey.

Lesson Plans & Projects

The EFMR Monitoring Group actively involves all segments of communities living and working in Central Pennsylvania.

EFMR has brought antagonistic and entrenched entities together and formed a partnership around radiation education and nuclear research. EFMR has fostered a pro-active communal tool that allows citizens to be involved in a technology that traditionally has intimidated or alienated most Americans. Responsible educational programs surrounding one of the most controversial issues of this region's history is an unprecedented positive step.

EFMR seeks to aggressively implement and increase conventional and continuing education in wind energy in Pennsylvania. EFMR is currently preparing a wind curriculum and resource guide for the Sustainable Energy Fund of Central Eastern Pennsylvania. EFMR and the SEF educational programs will enhance student and faculty awareness and participation in wind energy in Pennsylvania.

EFMR is also seeking to strengthen and extend its existing educational partnerships with environmental educational bodies , non-governmental organizations, charter, private and public schools, community colleges and four-year colleges and universities, and religious organizations interested in furthering the mission of increasing awareness, access, and the immediate viability of sustainable energy in Pennsylvania.
